1. Winter riding gloves - Use any pair of gloves that will keep your hands warm and use some fabric paint to to dab little dots on the palm side of the glove. When it dries, they will have a rubbery grip to them.
2. A small football placed in a water bucket overnight can prevent freezing.  (any round ball will work as it is the moving of the ball that prevents freezing).  If the water does freeze over, you can push the ball through to break the ice.  If you put an apple in the bucket, the horse may play with it enough to prevent the water from freezing.
3. Rub vaseline/ cooking oil/ cooking spray on the bottom of the horses feet to stop snow from balling up in them.
4. If your horse suffers from cracked heels in the winter, here is a recipe for an ointment that is less than $2 per tub:
1 jar of petroleum jelly
3 tablespoons olive oil
5-6 drops tea tree oil
5-6 drops lavender oil
splash of citronella (for nice smell)
Heat to mix well and then cool for 10 minutes.  Refrigerate to mold.  Rub in every 2-3 days.
5. Wear disposable gloves under your riding gloves to keep your hands from getting wet.  Wet hands are cold hands!  You can also put them on the outside of your gloves to keep the gloves from getting wet.
6. On really cold nights, fill a few buckets of water and leave them in the warmest part of the barn. Cover them with a spare turnout rug to prevent them from freezing.  Then  you'll have fresh water even if the pipes freeze.
7. Keep spare clothing at the barn in case  you get wet. Dry socks and gloves can mean the difference between misery and happiness.
8. Place reflective strips on your horses blanket if you have trouble finding them in the dark.
9. Wash muddy hooves off before picking the hooves to keep your hands from getting muddy.
10. Keep extra towels at the barn to dry off your hands or your horses hooves.
11. Go-Jo hand cleaner - when it is too cold to bathe your horse at a winter show, use Go-Jo hand cleaner to remove manure stains. - from Bridie in FL
